Problem Gambling Funding Bills Face Difficult Legislative Process

Following the rapid expansion of sports betting and online gaming in the U.S. over the last five years, lawmakers in several states have introduced bills during the 2023 legislative sessions that are designed to increase awareness as well as funding for problem gambling prevention and treatment services.

Eric Persson, chief executive of Maverick Gaming, has unsuccessfully lobbied lawmakers for more than two years to allow cardrooms in Washington state to offer legal and regulated sports betting, but that has not stopped him from getting behind another legalization effort this year.

Problem Gambling Prevention Funding Focus Of U.S. State Lawmakers

In 2023, lawmakers in several states will consider proposals to increase funding for problem gambling or prioritize treatment services as they deal with the impact of new forms of legalized gambling on their communities, including sports betting and casino gaming.
